Olga Swims Alcatraz!

Olga Swims Alcatraz!

Alcatraz beckons for Olga Tseyukova who has set herself the daunting challenge of swimming from the legendary prison island off the Californian coastline to the shores of San Francisco Bay in support of Depaul Ukraine which provides a safety net for street children, disadvantaged young people & homeless adults in Ukraine.  Olga, who is Chair of the charity's Ukrainian Trustees, only learned to swim a couple of years ago, but has already won gold in a recent competition, and preparations for her swim later in August are well under way.

Although only 1.5 miles across the bay, it's still treacherous because of the strong tides and chilly waters - a very good reason why Alcatraz was chosen to house a prison! It was once home to some of the most notorious criminals when the federal penitentiary operated there from 1934 to 1963 with infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelley, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud.
